Meg Rohrer

Detroit-based violinist and violist Meg Rohrer is intrigued by the wide range of sounds that can come out of her acoustic wooden instruments, and loves to express her voice through newly composed projects, inter-arts collaborations, traditional classical works, and improvising.

Rohrer centers much of her work around chamber music, and is now the violinist/violist of Virago, a mixed instrumentation quartet that melds contemporary chamber music with free improvisation, the first violinist of the Converge String Quartet, and performs regularly in the metro Detroit area. Since winning her first Concerto Competition at the age of 15, Meg has appeared as a soloist with orchestra at venues in California, Illinois and Michigan, and her orchestral appearances have taken her across the globe from Italy to Hong Kong. An active and passionate violin teacher and chamber music coach, Meg teaches with Crescendo Detroit, maintains an active private studio, enjoys guest teaching at festivals, and challenges all of her students and mentees to listen more deeply to each sound they produce, and to broaden their sonic imaginations as well as athletic facility on their instruments.

Meg earned her masters degree at the University of Michigan studying with Danielle Belen and Caroline Coade, and holds a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University where she studied with Blair Milton.  She has had the privilege to work closely as a soloist with notable composers Augusta Read Thomas and Shulamit Ran, and to have been recently coached in chamber music settings by artists such as yMusic, the Aizuri Quartet, the Dover Quartet, and members of the International Contemporary Ensemble.
